The Thoughtful Investor
We Have More Financial Information Than Ever. So Why Don’t We Understand Money?
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
We have more financial information at our fingertips than ever before. So why are investing, financial planning, interest rates, inflation, bonds, and the stock market still so poorly understood?
In this introduction to The Thoughtful Investor, Bryan Yach, CFP® explores a problem he believes deserves more attention: financial education in America hasn’t kept pace with the increasingly complicated financial decisions people are expected to make. We can check the S&P 500 from our watches and follow financial news around the clock, but access to more information doesn’t necessarily create better understanding.
Bryan brings together his background in broadcasting with his career as a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional, Wealth Advisor, and owner of a financial advisory firm. The goal of the podcast is simple: take important (and sometimes complicated) investment concepts, dig into the research and history behind them, and make them understandable and useful.
The Thoughtful Investor will explore questions like: Why own bonds if stocks have historically returned more? Why do investors panic during bear markets? What does diversification actually accomplish? Why can a great company still be a bad investment? And how should the purpose of a portfolio change as your financial life changes?
Expect conversations about investing, stock and bond markets, retirement planning, portfolio construction, behavioral finance, economics, financial planning, and investment history, sometimes through current events and sometimes through the people and ideas that shaped modern investing.
Because having more financial information, it doesn't mean that we always understand it.
Follow The Thoughtful Investor. We've got a lot to talk about.

(upbeat music) I love talking about investing. Markets, economics, financial planning, behavioral finance, the people and ideas that shaped the way we invest today. I've spent more than 15 years in financial services working with thousands of families through bull markets, bear markets, retirement decisions, and just about everything in between. I've also spent time on advanced trading desks about charting patterns, margin balances, and multi-leg option strategies. Investors all have one thing in common, they could always learn more. Welcome to The Thoughtful Investor. I'm Bryan Yach. I'm a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, professional, wealth advisor, and owner of Yach Advisors based in Southlake, Texas, working with clients all over the country. Before I built a career in financial planning, I had a background in broadcasting. I loved radio, I loved being behind a microphone. First of all, I loved taking an interesting subject, digging into it, and finding a way to tell the story. The Thoughtful Investor brings those two worlds together. Worlds are colliding, because I strongly believe that we need better financial education in this country, whether you're an educator, an advisor, novice investor, or a client of mine. I think we can all agree that the curriculum in high school wasn't really about making good financial decisions. We all know the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell, whatever that means, but we don't know how inflation impacts interest rates, Fed rate decisions, the value of bonds, and government spending. We have more financial information at our disposal than ever before. We have CNBC, YouTube, podcasts, TikTok, 24-hour market coverage. You can check the S&P from your watch while standing in line for coffee, but more information doesn't necessarily mean more understanding. In fact, there's a good chance a lot of this information can easily shroud misinformation. So I wanna help answer questions like, why do we own bonds if stocks have historically returned more? Why do intelligent people panic during bear markets? Why is my advisor recommending diversification? Why does diversification actually matter? Why can a great company still make for a bad investment? And what happens when you spent 30 years accumulating money and suddenly you're let go from your employer? Did you plan for this? And what do you do next? Those are conversations I wanna have here. Sometimes we'll talk about what's happening in the markets right now. We always want to look at current events with context, but sometimes we'll go back and meet people that helped make the world what it is today, like Benjamin Graham, Adam Smith, Harry Markowitz, and look back at the ideas that changed investing forever. We'll talk about the research. We'll talk about history. We'll talk about what happens when all these theories run headfirst into the real world and actual human behavior. It's kinda like how in physics class, everything works in a vacuum and then you go to the real world and there's friction. The real world doesn't always operate like a textbook. And I'm not interested in pretending I can tell you what the market's gonna do next. There's plenty of places you can get that. I've encouraged clients that I work with to understand the perspective and motivations a person has before you let that advice affect your investment decisions. In essence, I want you to become a more thoughtful investor, no matter what stage you're at in your journey. So if markets fascinate you or even confuse you, if you want to better understand investments beyond the headlines, or if you wanna become a more well-informed investor, follow the thoughtful investor. We've got a lot to talk about. I'm Bryan Yach Welcome to the thoughtful investor. Let's get started.(upbeat music)
